Hello, I'm Dion Vergara. I am a proud Napa resident and dad. I have worked as a Corporate Chef and Foodservice Professional for over 20 years. Both of my grandfathers were chefs, so I guess I was destined to follow in their footsteps. I studied at the CIA Greystone and at Pizza University. There's nothing I love more than seeing happy faces eating my food. For the competition, Dion will be serving Joe's White Clam Pizza—salty and spicy, a real umami bomb.
Wanderlust Pizza Co.
I’m Jason LaBue, a private chef and the owner of Wanderlust Pizza Co. I’ve spent my career chasing great food, but pizza has become my favorite way to bring people together. I’m obsessed with the craft—from naturally fermented dough and local flour to a hot wood-fired oven and simple, thoughtful toppings. For me, pizza is equal parts technique, creativity, and hospitality. I love the energy of cooking over fire, feeding a crowd, and making something that people genuinely remember. For the competition, Jason will be serving Shroom with a View, a naturally leavened sourdough pizza topped with whipped lemon ricotta, mozzarella, roasted maitake mushrooms finished with brown butter, and caramelized onions. Finished with toasted hazelnuts, fresh watercress, extra-virgin olive oil, and fresh Meyer lemon juice. The pizza is baked in a wood-fired oven and built around locally sourced, seasonal ingredients.
Rutherford Family Pizza
Born and raised in Las Vegas, John started making pizza in 1994, training in New York style pizza under a multigenerational pizza maker from Queens. In 2010, he expanded that foundation by training in Italian pizza, with a focus on Naples-style techniques. He married his wife in 1999 and began teaching mathematics in 2000. Together, they have four boys, ranging in age from 9 to 22. When he’s not teaching or making pizza, John is usually fishing. He’s an avid fisherman and will take just about any excuse to get on the water. For the competition, John will be serving Best Pizza, a light, garden-fresh Margherita with a delicate, airy crust that nearly melts in your mouth. Bright, vibrant tomato sauce brings fresh acidity and sweetness, balanced by creamy mozzarella, fragrant basil, and extra virgin olive oil. The crust is finished with a touch of Maldon sea salt for a clean, crisp pop of salinity. Simple, fresh, and bright, like summer from the garden in every bite.
Bella’s Pizzeria and Bakery
My name is Daniel Vázquez, and I am the founder of Bella’s Pizzeria and Bakery in Napa, California. My passion for pizza grew from seeing how a freshly made pizza can bring family, friends, and an entire community together. I enjoy every part of the process—from preparing and fermenting the dough to choosing quality ingredients and baking each pizza at high heat. For me, pizza is more than food; it is a way to express creativity, share hospitality, and create memorable experiences for others. For the competition, Daniel will be serving Bella’s Napa Fire, a wood-fired Neapolitan-inspired pizza featuring a light San Marzano tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, Italian fennel sausage, Napa red wine–caramelized onions, Calabrian chili, and Pecorino Romano. Finished after baking with fresh basil and a delicate drizzle of local hot honey, Bella’s Napa Fire balances savory, sweet, tangy, and gently spicy flavors while celebrating the character of Napa Valley.
Charles Krug Winery
My passion for pizza started in high school, when my dad first taught me how to make it. I’ve carried those skills with me throughout my culinary career, including time at Oakville Grocery, V. Sattui, and The Depot in Calistoga. Now at Charles Krug Winery, I continue to bring my love of great food and Wine Country together. For the competition, Damian will be serving Woodfire BBQ Chicken—a smoky, spicy, and meaty mouthful.
Char Theory Pizza
I grew up in New Haven, Connecticut, where pizza isn't just food; it's part of the local identity. I learned the craft working at Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana and later helped open their Boston-area location. My passion for pizza has been with me for decades. I've stretched dough, worked the ovens, cleaned up flour at the end of long nights, and learned that great pizza comes from simple ingredients, patience, and repetition. For the competition, Dana will be serving the Char Theory Signature Pepperoni Pie, a New Haven-style pizza with thin, hand-stretched dough with a crisp, chewy crust and signature char, topped with a bright tomato sauce, whole-milk mozzarella, pepperoni, fresh garlic, oregano, and Pecorino Romano. Simple by design, with a focus on balance, texture, and technique. The pepperoni crisps and chars at the edges while its rendered fat mingles with the sauce and cheese. It’s the kind of pizza that inspired Char Theory in the first place: no gimmicks, just a really good pie.
Foodshed Takeaway
Coming from Philadelphia, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in restaurant management, Daniel spent 15 years working in the dining rooms of fine dining restaurants, including The French Laundry. He transitioned to the kitchen when he and his family took over Foodshed Take Away, a Roman-style pizzeria and take-away company. Today, Daniel leads the kitchen team, creating classic Roman-style pizzas inspired by those you might find on the streets of Rome. For the competition, Daniel will be serving "The Core Four", a cheeky blend of summer and fall. This pizza is a combination of sweet, spicy, cheesy, and zesty flavors that is sure to pop.

I am a home cook from American Canyon. Cooking is one of my favorite things to do in my free time. I’ve been making pizza since 2018, and it really has become one of my great passions. In 2023, I won the Coppola Wines Perfect Your Pizza contest with a Dungeness crab creation, and I’ve also competed locally at the San Francisco Pizza Festival. I’m always amazed and inspired by the pizza community, and I love seeing what I can come up with creatively. For the competition, Tim will be serving Lavender Haze. My wife loves lavender as a flavor, so the primary inspiration behind this pizza was to find a way to incorporate lavender without having the flavor overwhelm the pizza. So I've tried to subtly use three different ingredients that all incorporate lavender to capture that flavor. Lastly, I added potatoes because I love potatoes on pizza. It’s very much a comfort food with all that carb-on-carb goodness.
